In the fading light of the longest day, I paid my garden a overdue visit. The garlic leaves are just starting to turn. Lonely bees vibrate through the air. My presence disturbs a toad.
I found the “dying” sage bush over-taking the sidewalk to have renewed vigor. June, having finished growing her plums has moved her top branches closer to the sun by a good six inches. A baby squash from a volunteer has set and sets to expanding in girth. An earwig is devouring a strawberry – I relieve him of his dessert. Tomatoes are swelling and lime leaves are curling and it is definitely the late start of Texas summer.
And here I am weeks later finding this saved as a draft instead of published…so it goes.
Better late than never! I miss my garden.
Indeed, although as much as I hate being late, I considered simply deleting the draft. Your garden probably misses you and will be glad for your shadow as soon as you can cast it.
Last I looked, it is being overrun with invasive grasses (Bermuda, lizard nut grass) for lack of thick mulching and a regular definition with a shovel. I’m lucky to get out to mow on the weekends — last weekend the St. Augustine lawn was 8-10″ tall!
Fortunately, I’m harvesting figs, tomatoes, and eggplant and a few herbs and chives. It makes it a bit better. But, boy, was it hot here this past week. Hope you’re escaping the dry heat over there!
It’s cooled down this week from last…the beds are holding their own against the Bermuda and St. Augustine. The Johnson Grass and the Crab Grass are as tall or taller than I am…at least they shade the ground?
Oooo…Johnson grass. We don’t have that here. Indeed. Good shade. Maybe plant some petunias in their canopy. 🙂
Glad you didn’t delete it…nice musings 🙂
Question is, have you been back since?
In very short fits and bursts. Picking a strawberry here, a tomato there, destroying mealy bugs over that way…finding the Great Onion Experiment really did make seeds…
I’m glad you didn’t delete the post. Your words are to nice not to share.
Aww, thank you!
Meant to say “too” nice. 🙂
So it goes 🙂 it’s still good to read no matter when you post it. Oh, and right now I’m not brave enough to look in my drafts… way too many to contemplate!
At least they’re there to contemplate 🙂 I hope your summer is sunnier than last year!
