Almost on cue, the garden is packing it in for the summer. The tomato vines are drying up. Some fruit ripens on brown vines. Other fruit dehydrates where it hangs.
With some help and a helper’s chipper, any soil exposed by the dying crops is now mulched by the gift of a fallen limb.
It may be a bit early, but I couldn’t help myself. I have the first of the fall crop transplants sown in plugs in the laundry room.
The outdoor oven (aka the weather) has begun. Perhaps I’ll set aside some corn stalks for Halloween. They’re drying where they stand quite nicely.

Just planted potatoes, but have no idea how they’ll do. Pumpkin and butternut is next. Tomatoes and peppers are still cranking over here, a pint or more day, thanks to rain. Mm. Corn…
Irish potatoes? You’ll have to let me know. I’m usually harvesting those in April. I’m excited by three melons growing that I sowed last year… So I don’t remember what kind they are! A delicious surprise.
I like everything here, FYI, but this phrase stays with me : “mulched by the gift of a fallen limb” It helps me think about more than I see. Also it sounds nice! (And appropriate for the meaning, which carries both sweet and melancholy thoughts at once)
