They came anyway.

She painted it metallic pinks and purples. Covered it in foam sticker butterflies and hearts. We hung it on the fence and waited.

The rains came and the heat, too, and the paint started to peel. A sticker and then two and twenty washed away.

A few butterflies remain and today, she squealed a whispered jump for joy in my ear.

“They found it! Look, mama!”

Howdy, new neighbor. Make yourself at home.

Oh, that’s wonderful! Patience rewarded. It took some time for a friend to get birds in the house she built, but they eventually came.

My little treat for the day was getting to hear an Eastern gray squirrel — aka a cat squirrel — actually meowing. I’ve heard them in the hill country, but it’s been a long time. It took me a while to realize the sound was coming from the side of a palm tree.

I’m glad there is room for many of us. Very nice!

Agreed. I’ve been enjoying a quote lately that you reminded me of just now:
“If you are more fortunate than others, build a longer table not a taller fence.”

If we stop and realize that each of us is more fortunate than many, and built longer tables, how much more beautiful the world would be.

For all my yammering about birds this, wildlife that, I never have any nesting in the boxes around my garden. Well, I used to have owls, now, not even that. 😦 I’m glad your little ones have some littler ones to watch.
